Govind Dev Ji Temple

Govind Dev ji Temple is a famous temple, located at Jaipur in the princely state of Rajasthan, where Govind Dev Ji, the name given to Lord Krishna who is the main deity here. It is located at the City Palace complex in between the Chandra Mahal and the Badal Mahal. The idol was the principal deity of the Kachawaha Dynasty of Amber and was originally present at Vrindavan, but was later shifted from there to Jaipur by Raja Sawai Jai Singh ji. Legend has it that Raja Sawai Jai Singh had a dream in which Govind Dev Ji asked him to carry the idol from Vrindavan to Jaipur. After the death of Raja Sawai Jai Singh, Raja Man Singh constructed the temple in 1890 for the deity. The temple is located in the centre of the city and is easily approachable from Jaipur by rickshaws, taxis and local buses.

Architecture

The architecture of this temple is well known. The idol of Lord Krishna is made of black stone where as the idol of Radha is made of metal. Built in the havlei style, the Govind Dev Ji temple is at the height of seven stories and has a great combination of beautiful and exquisite inscriptions and is an architectural inspiration to all. The shrine carved in Redstone is a wonderful sight indeed. Some of the other raw materials that were used to construct the temple were Jaliyana, Lime and sand. The castle like gates in the temple is quite impressive.

Attractions

One of the main attractions of this temple is the black colored marble idols of Govind Dev Ji and Radhika Ji who are adorned with gold ornaments. These idols are taken in a grand procession around the temple. Chants of “Jai Govind” fill the air, as devotees throng the temple to have a glimpse of the deities. Devotional music and hymns are sung by the devotees at the temple. Aartis are performed nearly seven times in a day with a unique type of Bhog being offered each time. Bhog is offered in silver containers and mostly consists of different varieties of sweets. Before the aarti, the idols are decked up and each time they are revealed to the devotees they are dressed differently and the deities look stunningly beautiful. The festival of Janmashtami, which commemorates the birth of Lord Krishna, is an event for great celebrations. Devotees throng the temple to have a glimpse of their favorite deity and take part in the various religious celebrations that are organized on the occasion. The temple presents a true example of unity in diversity. The rituals at the temple take place according to Hindu traditions.

The temple is a true blend of architecture with the culture and traditions of India. Tourists visiting the temple carry mementos of idols or paintings of Lord Krishna and Radha. Art works done in marble and embroidered or beautifully hand woven pieces of clothing are also preferred as souvenirs. The temple is a major tourist attraction with visitors pouring in from all over the world.
