Jaigarh Fort

One of the most spectacular and breathtaking forts in Rajasthan, Jaigarh for is situated just 15 kms from Jaipur. One of the reasons for its popularity is that most of its original facilities are well preserved and intact.

Jaigarh fort and the Amber Fort are connected by well guarded passages and are often considered as one Complex by many. The Jaigarh fort is situated at an elevation of 400 ft from the Amber Fort and was built between the 15th and the 18th century. Given that this is a famous tourist spot, there are several local busses and taxi operators playing to and from the fort. The Fort is famous of the world’s largest cannon present in its premises.

Architecture

Jaigarh fort is also known as the Victory fort and is perched on top of a hill known as Cheel ka Teela (Hill of Eagles) amidst the thorn scrubs which leave an imposing impact on the spectators. This fort was mainly constructed to tighten the security of Amber. Several of its medieval structures are worth exploring.

The Foundries in the Jaigarh fort are really captivating and offer a lot of insight to the tourists. The mechanism by which these foundries drew in air from the deserts is really intriguing. There is also a 5 km long canal entering the fort which used to bring in water from the hills and store the water in the huge water tank present inside the fort. The water was stored for the army men.

It is believed that the royal family used to store their gold and jewelry beneath these water tanks. In 1975-1977, the tank was opened when the emergency was declared by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Attraction

The fort is not as aesthetically appealing as Amber for because the main purpose for the construction of this fort was to tighten the security in Amber. Nevertheless, this fort has a charm of its own that cannot be denied. The main attraction of the fort is the huge cannon known as Jaivan.

This is believed to be the largest cannon in the world. The fort is also a standing expression of the mastery that the ancient world had over architecture. There are several wide water channels which were part of the rainwater harvesting systems and the fort also has three water tanks, with a storage capacity of 60,00,000 gallons of water.

The museum is another attraction which has a collection of photographs, processions, cards, puppets and coins. The amoury has the guns, muskets, cannon balls, swords and shields that were used by the kings in those days. There are some sedan chairs too which are part of the collections and drums too which are at the Meeting Hall of Warriors also known as Shubhat Niwas.

The Jaigarh fort has a charm of its own and is a perfect example of the architectural wonders of the yesteryears. On their visit to the fort the tourists can also enjoy the wonderful view of the city below.
